This directory contains one subdirectory for every cruise that we have cast data from. fsxxxx cruises are all September cruises on Lance. fs2007-2 is the April 2007 cruise on the KV Svalbard fs2008-2 is the April\May 2008 crise on the KV Svalbard fs2005-2 is the May 2005 cruise on the KV Svalbard fs2001-2 is the April 2001 cruise on Lance Notes regarding attributes ------------------------------------ ctd: values used: sbe911plus, sbe19plus, unknown platform: values used: lance kvsvalbard icefloe (helicopter stations are entered as icefloe as we did everything from the ice not from the helicopter) date: where date\time are missing the data attribute is set to the string 'unknown'. originalstation Usually a 16-bit integer. Except when there was no original station number. In that case the string 'unknown' is used. Notes regarding cruises --------------------------------------- fs2009: all ok fs2008-2: Some stations are missing. These are biological stations that have not been processed yet. fs2008: all ok fs2007-2: Station 001 is missing. There is raw data but it was not processed. fs2007: all ok fs2006: no ctd type in .cnv files - I got it from the cruise report fs2005-2: all ok fs2005: An unknown time system was used here. I added a correction factor to convert it to julain days, but the results do not agree with the .cnv files exactley. Times agree to within +\- 1 minute so I have left it for now. fs2004: all ok fs2003: all ok fs2002: all ok fs2001: There is no matlab file for this cruise. According to the cruise report data were calibrated from salinity bottles. In the process directory there are strange files ending in .dat and in the raw directory .cnv files. I presume the .cnv files have not been calibrated. Instead of going through the raw data again I wrote a script to load in the old style NetCDF files and then write out new NetCDF files in the approved format. There old files contained a strage time system when seems to be the same as the one used in 2005. I applied the same correction factor as in 2005. fs2001-2 all ok. There were some data collected from isfjorden this year as part of a teaching excercise. These are missing. But perhaps we don't want them? fs2000: Not sure what happend this year. The directory names and file names suggest some stations were done with Polarstern and some with Lance. The cruise report does not mention Polarstern, but it is very short. The readme file is blank. The cruise report mentions 91 stations, but there are only 78 stations in the matlab file (stations 19 and 27 are missing). There are raw files and .cnv files for 82 stations. I have made NetCDF files from the 78 stations in the matlab file. The platform is set as lance - but this might be wrong. fs1999: These data were stored in a pair of struct arrays in place of the normal variables. Station numbers run from 19301 to 31601 but are not unique!! This stops us from naming netcdf files by station number (we would have two files with the same name). I have made new station numbers and assigned them to stations in chronolocigal order. The first station completed is 001 and the last station completed is 148. Original station numbers are stored in an attribute called originalstation. Vessel unknown, CTD unknown. fs1998: More of the same struct arrays as 1999. No cruise report. Station numbers in the Matlab file are different to station numbers in the raw data files. In the matlab file the same station number is used for two different stations. This stops us from naming netcdf files by station number (we would have two files with the same name). I have made new station numbers and assigned them to stations in chronolocigal order. The first station completed is 001 and the last station completed is 107. Vessel unknown, CTD unknown. Original station numbers are stored in an attribute called originalstation. fs1995: More duplicate station numbers. We need to agree on a good solution for this. Vessel unknown, CTD unknown. fs1993: Vessel unknown, CTD unknown. No other problems fs1992: Vessel unknown, CTD unknown. Some stations contain no Pressure, Temperature or Salinity data. These are deleted. fs1991: Vessel unknown, CTD unknown. Otherwise ok fs1990: The vertical resolution is very low and there are nuver more than 16 data points at a station. Measurements are every 10 to 50 meters. I suspect this is actually bottle data and not CTD data. Vertical location was specifed as depth not pressure. I calculated pressure from depth and latitude using one of the seawater routines. Vessel unknown, CTD unknown. fs1989: This data is a bit of a mess. Some station seem to only have bottle data. Other staions seem to have bottle data at the top followed by a cast. There are no original station numbers, no station depths and no dates or times. Vertical location is sometimes pressure and sometimes depth. I converted all to pressure. Vessel unknown, CTD unknown. fs1988: This is all nice tidy cast data with dates. There are no station numbers or station depths. Vessel unknown, CTD unknown. Otherwise all ok. fs1987: This all looks like bottle data but it's nice and tidy and has station depths. No station numbers though. Converted depths to pressures. Vessel unknown, CTD unknown. fs1986: This all looks like bottle data but it's nice and tidy and has station depths. No station numbers though. Converted depths to pressures. Lat\Lon are only 1 decimal place but I guess this was the pre-gps era! Vessel unknown, CTD unknown. fs1985: Same as 1986. Vessel unknown, CTD unknown. otherwise ok. fs1984: This is CTD cast data, No station depths. Vessel unknown, CTD unknown. No station numbers. In some places 99.999 seems to be used as an error code. Replaced this with NaN; fs1983: This is a mix of bottle cast data, BOTTLES ARE IN DIFFERENT LOCATIONS TO CASTS! SO NO USE FOR CALIRATION. No station depths. Vessel unknown, CTD unknown. In some places 99.999 seems to be used as an error code. Replaced this with NaN; Station numbers ok , but no station times or dates. fs1982: This is a mix of bottle cast data. THE BOTTLES ARE FROM DIFFERNT LOCATIONS TO THE CASTS SO ARE NO USE FOR CALIBRATION No station depths. Vessel unknown, CTD unknown. In some places 99.999 seems to be used as an error code. Replaced this with NaN; Station numbers ok , but no station times or dates. fs1981: This is bottle data. No station depths. Vessel unknown, CTD unknown. Station numbers ok, Station dates and times ok. Converted depths to pressures. About station date: October is probably correct. In an old overview there were two cruises that year, one in August, and one in October. But the cruise in August is marked with “No data on CD-ROM”.
